FR 225 - 1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate
This note is listed as No 7 on list of 100 Greatest American Currency notes. This is one of the most desired of all silver certificates due to its intricate printing and short history existing only from 1896-1899. The front features an intricate border with the names of prominent Americans encircled lining the edges. The main vignette is of “History Instructing Youth” overlooking the US Capitol, Washington Monument, and a copy of the US Constitution. The notes were short lived when it was discovered their design, which was created to thwart counterfeiters, actually made counterfeiting easier because the design was so busy. Bankers reported that the notes were easily smudged and the general public became suspicious of the notes. The reverse depicts George and Martha Washington surrounded by details intricate green borders. This note is signed by Bruce and Roberts which is slightly more uncommon than the Fr 224 signed by Tillman and Morgan.
